New stadium in Chümoukedima honours legacy of Sammogooting
DIMAPUR — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the Sammogooting Stadium at the DC office complex, Chümoukidema, on
Friday. Construction of the stadium took 21 months—from May 2023 to January 2025—and came at the cost of INR 9,51,51,766.
While inaugurating the facility, the chief minister explained that the stadium has been christened Sammogooting after
thoughtful consultation, as it holds historical significance.
He said that in 1866, Sammogooting was notified as a British
administrative centre under the Assam Province; however, the British presence dates back even earlier, with a political
officer stationed here from 1846 to 1850. In Sammogooting, he said, British officers governed the Naga Hills, marking a
pivotal moment in the region's history, and the establishment of the first British government led to various changes,
including the introduction of modern education and Christianity.
